Plan or Just Go For It

I stated in a track planning thread, way back in 2005, that a trackplan on a piece of paper or a computer screen is NOT a blueprint. It should be looked at instead, a a guide to accomplish what you want.

I have never, in my many years in this hobby, seen a layout that was built entirely as drawn. I have seen them drawn, however as built.

Absolutely correct, CJ. I've worked on projects where we spent years engineering the construction and we still had "as-built" corrections to the drawings because things changed once we started to move dirt. I wouldn't try to build a layout without a plan but I also realize that plan is just what it indicates - a plan. Things will change as you build your layout. As long as your original plan was sound, most of the changes should be relatively minor. A big warning sign is when you are moving whole sections of track because things don't fit. When that happens, it's time to go back to the plan and figure out what went wrong.
