Dear All,
I'm painting a set of Overland Models F-3's, a PA and several passenger cars in the GM&O Maroon and Red color scheme. My customer gave me a Overland Models PA and a passenger coach, custom painted by Gwynne Burch and asked me to match it.
I have tried mixing Scalecoat Daylight Red (S31) and Erie Lack (S43) with a few drops of Blk (S10), Scalecoat CB&Q Red (S76), S43 and S10, S31, Flo 177 ATSF Blue, and S10, all the "primary colors" and all I get is something resembling "Mud".
Please Mr. Burch if you are out there, or anyone, can you please give me your recipe (using Scalecoat paints) for the GM&O Maroon and the GM&O Red as used on the Overland "custom painted" PA #291 and/or the GM&O #1604 passenger car.
Thank you in advance for any help
Happy Railroadin

If you're trying to match the maroon, try starting with Tuscan which is a CPR maroon colour and either lighten or darken and add different shades of colour to match. Hope this helps.

Bill;

Gwynne is located in Elba Al. You may be able to check the online phone book for a listing.

As to a match, have you taken the loco to a paint store and have them match a mixture on their computer? If you do this, I would recommend going to an auto paint store. They would be more willing to mix up a small batch in a sprayable medium more so the a regular paint store.

Mr. Carey, thanx for the info about MR. Burch. David Marsh told me the same thing, suggesting I might be able to fine him online, but not being very computer savvy, I do not know how to get to an online phonebook. Could you or someone, please tell me how to get to a online phonebook.
I did think about taking the model down to the local S-W paint store but never acted upon it. We do have a PPG paint store in town and I will try what you suggested.
Thanx to you, also UP Big Boy, I tried a mix using CP maroon, but wasn't happy with the results.
Gwenne Burch is an excellant painter and I believe I can copy his work. That is why I want his paint recipe.

You're Welcome, Bill!

Here is a side story about Gwynne. When I lived in Mobile, and was doing a lot of custom painting, Gwynne asked me about assisting him with his painting of Overland diesels. He was, and may still be their primary painter.

He wanted me to take about 1/2 of each run, paint and decal them, then send them back to Overland. I turned him down as one, each run had to be painted within 2 weeks, and working full time in the hospital OR, I didn't have the time. Plus I don't like to paint "under pressure". At that time, I would paint, detail, decal etc a locomotive as the customer wanted, but he had to understand that I worked at a slow deliberate pace to avoid any and all mistakes I could.
