I thought I'd share our story about our small MR group.
About three years ago a new MR club formed in our area and for the first time in some 15 years i decided to join a MR club but after 12 months I found it difficult to get to meetings due to work, and with increased membership fees to cover increased insurance, rent for the club rooms and other sundry expenses, I made the decision to leave the club. Around the same time four other members decided to leave also and soon after we decided to meet up once a week for a MR night.
The five of us have grown into a tight knit group. With a weekly roster we spend a Wednesday evening sitting around someone's dining table, each of us bringing along a kit to build, a loco to lubricate or just a few magazines to share over a beer, port or coffee! Since our group started we have invited another two fellow modellers. Only three of our group have an operational layout so every 2-3 weeks it's a different running evening on a different layout with BYO locos and rolling stock.
It's a great arrangement. No meetings, no agendas or voting, no taking minutes. We have an amazing arrangment and are very fortunate the we all get along and help each other out with models and kits.
Official MR clubs are extremely beneficial and offer many, many rewards for their membership, but in our case we have found our best outlet is an unofficial group of mates catching up once a week for some MR over a beer.
