I finally finished this siding with a ballast/gravel "load out". At the site of an old quarry, trucks on the layout now bring ballast in to a clamshell shovel that loads creaky old truss rod gons. A concession to reality is the SP power used to switch there.

This is inspired by the old Valle Vista (closed) quarry near Moraga, CA from the Sacramento Northern days. A place we used to shoot pellet rifles, and generally act stupid, in the c. 1960 era. The real quarry closed around 1920. But the deep earth-cut will always be there.

Thanks All.

What made the project possible was finding that vintage bucket crane. I stumbled on the this place...

The alternative would have been some kind of tipple with an incline to its top for dump trucks. But I lacked the space to make it look right. Like how trucks could turn back around and such. Every time I add a scene I seem to wish for an extra inch or two of linear space - drat!

So the solution was bucket crane and a gravel pile it could pivot to. :)
