This plan I like, and am figuring on doing this with maybe a few little adjustments. I tore down and scrapped the board I had built and am in the process of building this layout against two walls. The radius's are all 11" radius track,(this is N scale), and I plan on using manual switches which are #4 in the drawing. This is going to be kinda mountainous with a smallish community in there some where with a few roads and hopefully some kind of small mining operation. This I don't plan on having the RR serve, but trucks going in and out. This is my vision for now, and I like it more than anything else I had come up with over the last couple of months. Not sure yet if I'm going to go with all flex track, or just flex where it would be easier to make the track connect up, like a couple places in the drawing.
I have to ask the obvious question.
Assuming the top and left sides of your layout are against the two walls, how will you reach the upper left corner of the layout? It's almost a 4-foot reach, and I don't know anyone with arms that long. Doing any work in that corner will require you to climb up onto the layout.
The reach is pretty long on some other parts of the layout, too, but nothing like that upper left corner.

No worries. I revised the plan and narrowed the width a little of the cut out area and reduced the distance to that corner to about 38". I can almost stretch it, but using the bottom rung on a small step ladder I can reach it just fine. I can get to all other areas with no problem.

Hi Paul -
I would suggest that 38" is still too long a reach, but it is your railroad, so go for it!
Good luck and have fun!

Just curious, it doesn't seem to have all that much in the way of operations. Are you planing to have industries that you will have trains service or is it more for mainline running?

It is more of a mainline running. There will be a small community in there somewhere with maybe a business or two with a siding, one possibly being a lumber yard. Also a small mine there also but not serviced by the railroad. I am more interested in doing all the building, scenery work, than I am in running a railroad. That is what I enjoy doing. So as far as RR operations go, I want to keep it somewhat plausible, and simple.
