Question for anyone that might know. When the NW and Southern merged, did they do any patch jobs, or did they wait until a repaint into the NS paint scheme??

I'm no expert on the NS but I don't recall seeing any patch jobs done to the locomotives of either railroad. The only patch jobs I've seen are on some former Conrail locomotives but never on a N&W or Southern unit. However, it's highly likely I'm wrong so we'll see what others say.

Thank you Jim for your honesty :) The reason I ask is I have 3 athearn SD-40-2's in NW. I'd like to patch 2 of them before I weather them. But I'm not sure what kind of patch to put on them. I suppose I could do one of the leasing companies???

I've never seen a patch. But it might be that NS still uses SOU & NW, look closely on some NS units.

This might be a good Resource to help ya out...

#2332 would certainly be an interesting one to try to get right in a model. It looks like it was just a quick black paint job over the Southern name and then repainted with the NS logo. The paint is wearing off so you can see the old Southern name underneath. Kind of an unintended patch job. :)

Well I took this NW unit #6185

And I made it into the newer version of unit #6185.

Who knows what I'll do to the other 2 NW units. LOL

Looks good Jerome! Would be nice to see you try and do like the 2332 above.. with the Old Logo coming thru... Seeing your skills, I bet it'd turn out awesome!

Scott, thank you for the extra pictures. It seems like it was more noticeable on the left side than the right. I will keep that in mind when I do this other SD-40-2.

Well here's the finished #6185 in the new NS paint scheme.

I was at my LHS today, I picked up the older style NS decals, so I will start on the over-layed decals this weekend.

I live in Roanoke and go by the NS facilities they have hear often. I have seen patch jobs before over the years it isnt unusual. And I think you can get away with some creativity if you want. Have fun!!

OK, I did the over paint tonight at work, here's how it came out.

Then I put all 3 engines together. This picture shows engine #6185 in all 3 different paint schemes.
