Hey guys,

Got me a shell for my Athearn Genesis... everything is finally swapped over, lights working, and awesome sound! Took a bit of filing and slight cutting (Genesis frame was slightly longer than the new shell).

Anywho, still learning more and more about my prototype I'm modelling.

Here's the same unit - can anyone give me a bit of insight to it?

It seems to have rear-mounted ditch lights, and snowplow (well, did NS still run all their units, or just this particular, unit long-hood forward?). What is the GSF region that is lettered on the cab? I'm trying to figure out how I want to model my unit.

Ooh- one more question. Do all of NS locomotives have both front and rear plows? As my shell came, it only had a front one. Didn't know how prototypical that was...

Thanks!
Kyle

I am only guessing but the rear ditch lights might be a NW/Southern hold over from the days of running rear first. I am only guessing, but if that helps

If you look closely on the rear of the long hood there is a small F on the frame designating it the front of the loco. On the NS SD60 the rear was actually the front of the loco and they were set up to run as such.

Ohkay, cool. Yeah, I was wondering how long NS kept the ol' Southern tradition of long-hood forward. Do they still try to run them that way even today?

As well - does that mean that they swap the engineer's controls to the otherside, or leave it stock? I.E. does the engineer sit on what would have been the firemans side?

Thanks!
Kyle

The SD50's and SD60's of NS's order were setup long hood forward and as such had dual controls. The units inherited from Conrail aren't that way. When they go in for refurbish, they will be corrected to short hood forward.
As of right now they are converting the SD50's to SD40E's, in that are derating them by removing the turbos, adding essential electronics, air conditioning and other amenities. The Sd60's will follow, but not for at least 2 years before they start on them.

Eric,
That is some great detail info, thanks. Do you know if they still run any C30-7's or any details about the C30-7 that will help me detail it correctly? I just placed an order for the BlueLine C30-7 NS and will be doing a detail to that soon.
Thanks,
Dave

The C30-7's were all retired in 2000 and sold for scrap. You are going to have to hunt around the net for pictures to help you detail that unit. The C30's were all low hood compared the B30's, which were all high hood and may have been the last high hoods with long end front operation ordered by the NS. My observation is that many crews still run NS units long hood first regardless of which end is designated front. It is a long ingrained habit with both ex-Southern and ex-Norfolk & Western engineers.
