I lived in Galveston during the summer of 1982, working as a roustabout on a tugboat called the "Ginny G" owned by Grasso Oilfield Services, which was part Diamond Shamrock.
It was the summer between High School and College. I convinced my dad that it would be a good way for me to learn the value of a hard earned dollar before heading off to college. I was 18... smarter than everyone else, and too brave for my own good. I went there with $500 cash and a lead on an apartment. Had a blast. I got to know a real roustabout (Vietnam vet named Ron Wooley) who took me to the Spaceland Parachuting Club, just outside of Houston, for some after-work fun. After being there for about 7 weeks, I came home with dad's $500 and the $100 I had saved. Dad was pissed. I scooted off to College without too many consequences.. at least nothing a shot of penicillin can't handle.
