Hey everyone, let me start off by saying, AMAZING site, i just recently got into collecting HO scale trains and was looking for a good site to support my questions, I started by buying the Bachmann EZ commander set and the track expander set and then some loose track packs ... i'll be starting on a 4x8 table, i am a complete novice when it comes to anything scenery so i'll be looking forward to visiting this site daily for information and inspiration .. thanks

Welcome to the forums, theres vast ammounts of information and tons of great people to help you out here, weve got a wide age range of people here as well, im 14, and at the low end, but theres members all the way through there 60's and 70's. Theres lots of people here who just enjoy model trains and arent overly picky about how real things are, and we have our share of rivet counters as well as those who produce phenomenal works of model railroad art/scenery. Theres a Coffee Shop thread here as well which is a great environment. By the way, the majority of us are like small children- and love to see pictures, so dont be shy to show us your work, be thrilled to admire/critique it lol.
Again welcome to the forums
Matt
Welcome aboard. The Bachmann E-Z Command set is an inexpensive way to get into DCC with some decent quality products. Assuming the set came with E-Z Track, I'd warn you to try the switches for a bit and see if they work to your satisfaction. Just set up a temporary track on your 4x8 and see if the switches work smoothly and don't cause derailments. This has been a real weak point with the E-Z Track system. Part of my layout is made with E-Z Track and the switches took a lot of work before they were even modestly reliable. I built mine from a 2006 set, so I hope they've improved the switches by now.
As I advise all newcomers, you should go on over to
www.nmra.com and read the Beginners Guide. It will answer a lot of basic questions about benchwork, track plans, wiring, and scenery. There are some good alternatives to the standard 4x8 layout that you should consider before you start to build in earnest.
