I have a 4’x2’ desk I want to build a layout for a big boy. I was thinking something based off a figure 8. I want to do something similar to this desert scene with the bridge over the other track. I found these on YouTube: IMG_0604.jpeg
This is the layout underneath.

I was also thinking something like this? Or a combo of the 2.

I don’t have room to do a double track section though because the big boy requires 11” curves. A full curve takes up the whole side of the table.

I used the following to make an oval to fit my table.
8 sections of 11” curve
4 sections of 9-3/4 straight
2 sections of 2-7/16 straight

I do want to have a straight piece in front. What I don’t know is what sections I need to get a figure 8? There’s 2 kinds of turn outs. A slight curve and a 6” curve. I.e. 20-241 and 20-203.

I know allot of people use anyrail.com but I don’t have a windows based computer. I’m also not good with geometry lol I don’t know how to calculate the size track pieces I would need to do this.

Any suggestions?

Well my replacement came in the mail today and she smokes!!!
looks really good. Lots of smoke for such a small unit.

#4015 helper will be here Saturday to complete the excursion.
Not that it really matters, but technically it is not a helper. 4014 doesn't need help with a train that small, but until recently the extra unit was required for the PTC electronics. Now that the 4014 has been fitted with its own PTC, they don't need it anymore. A second unit gets assigned as a backup should something go wrong so they aren't sitting there blocking the main. One will seldom see a UP train with only 1 motor.

Maybe it’s bad terminology. I know BB has enough power to not need a “helper” but I consider it a helper I guess because they allow bb to run longer/ further having the more fuel efficient diesel. Plus what you say as a fail safe too.

It’s been a little while. Finally got my layout built. I got very close to throwing this thing out the window. Allot of man hours went into this. To make it all work. Now I get to do the less stressful part, hopefully, of painting and decorating. Here’s a little video I put together to show it.

Another update to the train more than the layout. Added a bunch more cars to the BNSF line. More containers in the yard. Still need to build the intermodal crane. Next step is to start on the mountain and the rest of the layout. Video

Its been a while, Been doing a lot of speed matching and tweaking track to get everything just right, added some more slopes and container action in the yard. I'm almost ready for paint, just a few more spots to smooth out. Its been a long slow road but I'm getting there.
