i just set up my first train and im thinking about doing a mountain scene for it with tunnels and stuff, but im not really sure how to go about making the mountains or how large i should make them to have it be somewhat realistic im thinkin about useing styrofome to make the mountains and stuff since it forms easily and can be picked up for cheap or even free from some stores...is this a good way to go and if not what would be a better way to go about it?

Can't say about the styrofoam (if you're talking about the kind that chips off into round bits, definitely don't use it, but if it's the pink or blue stuff other people have used it with success) but size-wise, realism is in how it looks. Let's put it this way...some of the mountains I'm modeling are 3000 feet above the railbed. My model railway is in the basement of a 2 story house. If I were to model them full size, then the tops of the peaks would be at hip height on the top floor. What you need to have is the illusion that the little toe of a mountain that your train tunnels through is the end of a majestically soaring range, the best way to do this is with a backdrop and looking at the real thing.

Good question. I initially used foam sheets and cut them to fit as the books say. I then saw Woodland Scenes Sub-terrain system and found it to be outstanding and easy. Wish I had started the whole layout with that product. Look at Woodland Scenes web site. They have videos there and info on all there products. When I had to make changes to the layout I used the Woodland Scenes Su-terrain system and loved it. Look at it.....
