My Lionel Standard O Trains

I know from a product point of view they have always been failures. Each release from 1957 forward. One would have thought trying it once was enough. One would think there should be plenty out there in pristine condition for collectors, so I am surprised at some of the prices I am seeing.
I know in 1957 it was a bit of a "trial balloon" and very few sets were made.

Collectors market...it beats me.

I read one source that said a lot of the 1957 sets ended up going home to the department store owner's daughters because they couldn't sell them and Lionel would not accept returns. !?!

It's my understanding that only about 5000 of the original 1587S "Lady Lionel" sets were produced and very few have survived. Far fewer sets are in mint condition or even acceptable collectable condition. Not only was it a flop in the store, it seems many of the girls that did get one, tossed it out!
