my first layout - please comment!

I've always said that having the capability for continuous running is a plus. Maybe it isn't prototypical, but it is a practical matter. I like having the ability to run the loco continuously to break them in. I don't have a continuous DC loop, but my DCC layout does have continuous running. The best I can do when I buy a non-DCC loco is shuttle it back and forth a couple of times on the strip of EZ-track before I put a decoder in it. I'd rather run it for about a half-hour first, continually, so they can 'loosen up', and spread the lube. Locos just seem to run better after a break-in period.
