Starting the first mountain tonight.

It appears to me that the construction is pretty heavy stuff. To a new guy. Why such construction and not just 3/4 plywood? I used to build decks and furniture, In the pictures it looks like deck construction. :)
If you look back through Mikes's thread you'll see this is hardly a small layout, it's flipping huge, I'd rather over-construct a layout that size than have it warp, deform, or worse collapse, especially now seeing the size of the mountains currently under construction.

Chris pretty much hit the nail on the head with his post.

Origianally this layout was designed to have a second deck, thus the construction. I have since come to my senses and scrapped that plan to stay with a single deck that will keep me busy for many years.

This construction is actually not as stout as my previous N scale layout. It was constructed with all 2X4 framework, and 3/4 OSB sheeting.

As you read through building threads, you will find model railroaders tend to overbuild. The beauty of the hobby is, there are dozens of way to achieve the same result.
