MTH Union Pacific 9000 Class 4-12-2 Video

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

The MTH model has some articulation built into the chassis. You have the option of locking it with a screw. Doing so would probably increase the minimum radius to about half a mile! I wonder how BLI is going to handle smaller radii with its forthcoming class 9000 brass hybrid?

Nice video and engine. Nice also to see the gap between tender and cab tightened up a bit over what is usually the case for MTH HO models. :)

The BLI engine won't have the articulation, but it also won't have the 'working' Gresley valve gear. The curves will be handled by blind drivers, probably only the middle two axles. Also sideplay in those and the next outer axles, plus some slop in the eccentric cranks.

Yes, I recall hearing that about BLI's model. The MTH model also has quite a bit of slop to help traverse the curves. I know what you mean about the gap between the loco and tender, but most if not all of the MTH models have two positions on the drawbar to connect the tender so layouts with both large and small radii can be accommodated. When you look at MTH's own videos that they produce, the loco/tender gap is usually large, but by their own admission they do that because their promo layout featured in their videos has smaller radii.
