ICG/SOU
HO & O (3-rail) trainman
I spent a little while looking at Memphis last night on Bing Maps. I had never realized how big a railroading town it was/is.
Lots of industrial switching (look at President's Island for most of that), lots of old R.O.W. that's been ripped up (don't know whose yet, maybe old SOU trackage or NC&StL). I found a couple of IC cabooses downtown, some interesting trackwork at the main crossing where the IC is crossed by the BNSF and UP tracks.
If you zoom in and out over the Harrison Yard (formerly Johnson Yard, formerly Nonconnah Yard--IC/CN yard on the southwest side of town), you can see the before and after of a very large yard addition. You can also see a large roundhouse and turntable (still in operation, it looks like), and other little goodies.
A little to the north and east, along the tracks that come from across the River (I'm thinking joint ex-Frisco and MP tracks), you'll come to a small yard (I am assuming it was a SOU yard) with a very tightly crammed in area of petroleum tanks.
If you follow a line to the southeast, you'll come across what looks to be an old Frisco yard that was taken over by some industry, and the BNSF yard is much larger and farther to the southeast, almost to the state line. There is a large intermodal terminal there too.
I even found an old tower somewhere to the north, along the old ripped up trackage (that goes east/west).
If anyone has more information on Memphis, please post. From my limited knowledge, I knew that the IC, the YM&V (IC subsidiary), the SOU, Frisco, L&N, NC&StL, and MP all came into Memphis. Is there anyone I left out, or anyone I put in the list that wasn't? I ask because unless I haven't found all the yards, as I've only found evidence of 4, there are some yards that are unaccounted for. That's very much.
