Well I still can't get my Genesis Big Boy to run with the Zephyr controller. The controller seems to be working fine but when I place the Big Boy on the track the Zephyr detects a short no matter what I do. Now will a bad decoder cause a short?
Yes, a bad decoder could cause a short. It could also be a short in the locomotive. I'm not familiar with the locomotive, but you might check to see if it is a plug in decoder. If it is, unplug it and see if the engine still causes a short. If you have removed a "dummy" plug from an Atlas engine, you could try plugging that in and see if it runs on DC.
I had a Proto 2000 that had two solder bridges on the decoder socket. Not only did it short, it fried the decoders.
