Edmonton LRT train kills 2 teens

Edmonton police are investigating the deaths of two teenagers hit by an LRT train just after 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Witnesses say six teens were running in the area at 82 Street and 114 Avenue when a boy and girl among the group took off down the tracks.

Brittany McLeod was driving by when they almost ran into the girl.

“We almost hit her with the car and then they took off,” she said.

McLeod said it looked as if the girl was being chased.

“Like they were running,“ she told CBC News at the scene. “There were kids there. There was a girl. She just dropped to the ground and started punching and, I don’t know, they were fighting.”

The boy died at the scene. The girl was trapped under the train where emergency crews spent almost an hour trying to free her. She died in hospital.

Homicide detectives have been called in, but police are not calling this a crime.

Police took the other teens in the group to the downtown station for interviews, said EPS spokesman Chad Orydzuk.

About 50 passengers were on the LRT at the time. None were hurt. They were moved to a second train and taken to Clareview station. LRT service was suspended between Coliseum and Churchill stations.
