Would anybody recommend using Vaseline as some sort of lubricant

might work for an automotive gasket replacement but I would not recommend it on your train.

No, petroleum jelly can degrade plastics and it is about 8000 weight! It will glue the gears rather than lube them.

While many used car salesmen have been accused of its use, I would not suggest putting it anywhere near a model train.

No worries Dude!
I once thought about using channel locks to remove the dipstick on my Harley.
Couldn't break it free with my hands.
Multiple tricks and attempts.
Younger brother from another mother got it out and said anytime I think about using channel locks, I'm supposed to call him first.
This is why I like having adults around. I need constant supervision.

I use three types of Labelle oils- a super light, a medium and a heavier one for certain gear sets. The lighter ones for bearings. Three bottles have lasted since the 1980s.
