I'm sure this has been asked a hundred times here, but I have Lionel switches (brown and black) and every time my engine rides across one (brown) it looses power. And the other it sparks (black).

I was asking about Lionel switches in another forum and this came up. Don't know if it has anything to do with your problem, but here is one reply I got.
"Negative: this seems to be a relatively common one: rollers on both engines and rolling stock have a tendency to make contact with the fat center rail and a ground rail causing sparks and worse at times".
