I have a chance to buy an HO scale lionel caboose but know nothing about them. Looks like truck mounted couplers from the picture, can change them out to body mounted. Could add detail too as required. Is the general quality par with Athearn or the lower quality Model Power for example? Thanks in advance.

Depends on which year it was made. Lionel never made any HO for themselves, it was always made by someone else, with the Lionel name brand.

Back during the 1960's, Lionel HO was made by Rivarossi and Athearn. During their second foray in the mid 1970's, Bachman made them.

This last time IIRC, they only offered locomotives. Chances are its a Bachmann, with their questionable quality from that era.

Yeah Cjc I was afraid of that. Even a closeup picture the quality looked questionable. Think I'll look for a better quality caboose. Thanks for your reply.
