I'd like to put some coiled rope on the tender of my shay and am wondering what is the best material to do this. I've searched around and found suggestions for 40 weight machine embroidery thread and found Berkshire Junction produces their EZLine in a "rope" color. What I can't find though are any pictures showing how these, or other products look. Anyone have any further ideas and photos?

I just went to Berkshire Junction and saw the rope on their web site. I don't think you're going to be able to find that detailed of a rope in HO Scale. I may be wrong. Look at the telephone poles and the video they have on their site. That should be able to give you an idea.
I'll second the ship modeling sites as a good idea. Some of those guys spin their own! I think Model expo may have what you need.
(Yeah I've built ships too!)
Berkshire Junctions EZ line is a great product but probably not what you are looking for. It doesn't have much of a "rope" texture.
Michael's or other craft stores have jewelry / beading supplies. They have some fine multi strand wire in different colors for beading. I have bought some to represent cable or rope. You probably want the highest strand count they have. It comes in several diameters. I think .015" is the smallest which would be a little over 1" in HO scale. (they also sell what appears to be the same stuff as the Berkshire Junction EZ line.)
I take it he approves then. Do you know how thick it is?
Edit: Found the manufacturer's website. They offer a variety of thicknesses: .2mm, .5mm, .8mm, 1.2mm, 2mm and 1.5mm. Now to figure out what size I want.
.5mm = ~1.75" in HO scale ... sounds like a good solid rope.
