I'm a novice trying to build a 4 x 8 layout for my grandson. I have
three questions at this point for which I need some help.

The layout calls for a Walthers double track truss
bridge. I read at least one review that said the bridge quality was quite poor and not worth the money. Any comments would be appreciated.

Also, I can't seem to determine whether this bridge requires purchasing
Walthers special bridge track. My layout is Atlas code 83.

Finally, can someone recommend bridge abutments that can be shortened
if necessary.

Thank you

I haven't read any bad reviews of the Walthers bridge, and the one I've seen look good. There are more detailed bridges from companies like Central Valley, but the Walthers bridge should be fine for your needs.

The only reason to purchase the special bridge track is that it has the guard rails already in place. You can use code 83 rails on the bridge and then make your own guard rails with code 83 rail, bent to shape at the ends. This can be super glued to the bridge ties.

Almost any pre-made bridge abutments can be shortened using a hobby saw. It's also not difficult to make your own abutments in the size you need using either foam or sheet styrene.
