Thanks Trent,
I hate to see her get beat up. I told her e-bay might be a good idea. A local hobby shop(that buys) to us is 75 miles away. Should she go the e-bay route, those figures will make a nice reference point. The brass and German stuff, has me wondering, what it is worth.

JP

Don't take it to the hobby shop unless they have a solid reputation about stuff like this. She'll get a few cents on the dollar for it.
Contact a local model RR club and ask them if they know of any good appraisers. We have a guy here in Lincoln that does that, but that's probably a bit far for her.

Brass locomotives, especially steam, can range from $500 to well over a thousand dollars. Please, do some research before you do anything with these.

Proto 2000 really depends on the locomotive, but Trent's in the ballpark of $50-60.

Please check your locomotive for DCC and Sound. I dont know how familiar with the trains you are, but if they have DCC, and Sound, the price can go up considerably.

Check ebay for alot of those items. Also, have you considered selling here? She would more than likely get a very fair price for each piece, and there are members here who would be interested in some of the more expensive pieces of the group.

Ebay works if you can understand that it will only sell for what the persons bidding thinks its worth. The numbers I gave out are based on what I would be willing to pay for those engines. some would pay more some less...you could start the bid at half what its worth and let it roll..

the engines are worth alot more than the cars are. try to sell them each to get more money. I think Most will by a loco based on the railroad the model so it has to match what they may already have. However there are people like me that will just repaint them to his or her home railroad. thus I would pay less for a loco knowing I need to work on it. If its in good used running order it should sell at least 1/2 its MSRP. new in box 2/3 the MSRP is fair. But again it will all depend how popular it was when new and if cheeper models of the same quality are out now.

it is common to find on ebay lot sets of 10+ cars that sell for $20-$30 some people do this just to sell them all and not one at a time. Its sometimes best to just sell them in lots and get rid of them all..

Again just my opinons

Trent

Send your list to Caboose Hobbies in Denver. They are a large, well known, and fair buyer of train models. They are also good appraisers of brass and European equipment. I agree that the Tyco stuff is probably worth a couple dollars a car, with the Athearn cars maybe $5 or so. Unfortunately, many of the "collector" sets aren't worth anything more than the original cost, and some can even be less. I'd at least see what Caboose Hobbies had to say before breaking up the collection.
