I'm looking for an HO station modern structure for my passenger terminal in my new layout extension.

The area I have available is 21" wide x 6" deep. Can be tall or short. It's going up against the backdrop. In between the train shed.

I've searched Walthers site, and the only one I like that will fit is by Kibri.

To get rid of that euro look, I can paint the roof black or grey.

Anybody have any ideas, or others places to look for modern station structures?

Thanks Ian, for the suggestions. The Walthers City Station is nice. But I wanted more of a multi-story building.

This is where it's going.

I think that the second one fits in with your scene better ( which btw amazing job on that backdrop), but funny you posted this because we are looking for a modern station too lol. Ours is going to be right in the downtown area, so that first one you posted might look good there if it was repainted. You are right though it does have that european feal to it.

I don't know how large you're looking for, but here's another one that would fit.

I like this one.

But not sure if it's appropriate for a 4 track train shed. I'm using the Walthers Milwaukee Train Shed.

I'm leaning towards the big Penn Station one, and cut it to fit. And I can add some tall trees to sort of mask the open looking backdrop in that area.

Patrick,

It won't look out of place, because of the big train shed in front of it. That's why I'm leaning towards getting the bigger station.

Thanks for the info Unfettered, I didnt know they actually made one like that. And thats a pretty neet shed Motley, I think that bigger one would fit right in with that. Keep us updated on pics!

OK I think it's decided then, I'll get the big station.

I'll use some trees around the station to cover up the open field in the backdrop.

I missed the comment earlier about you using the train shed. If money isn't a problem then I would get the expensive one. It should look quite nice with the train shed.

If you are still looking and want something 'modern', how about Walther's Amtrack station? You could add a few stories with the 6 story office building that comes as a kit, from one of DPM's competitors(can't remember the name right at the moment).

On my last layout, I used 3 DPM's HO M.T. Arms Hotel kits, for the basis of a rather large(city block like) Union Station-esque head house, on a viaduct above the platforms. I've also seen adaptations of various industrial buildings, into stations, such as Chuck (?'s) old Argintine Division, set in and around KC, over the years in assorted magazines that turned out quite well.

Of your 2 examples above, I like the 2nd one better. Seems more typical to the setting you're trying to emualte, based on your backdrop.

I've also been eyeing the Walther's YMCA building as the starting point of a larger city type station, with additional offices provided thru some other kit.

Will be interested to see what you choose. Good luck!

PS.

I'm considering the Penn Station model, as my version of the old Lackawanna station, in Scranton, PA. The model in you photo, as I understand it is a compressed version of Baltimore Union Station on the NEC. Scranton's station I beleive was designed either in the same style or buy the same architect.

I'm also considering using 2-3 Ambassador Hotel's from Bachmann's City Scenes line, to bash the head house of Philly's Reading Terminal. The shed you plan on using I've looked at for the shed of Reading Termina, but is not wide enough, and has different structural features. Rdg Term had no 'interior supports of the roof, just arches.

I was surfing ebay looking for stations, and I found a really cool one I have never seen by Heljan. http://www.gohobbies.com/item/Heljan/120.html I think this is the one im going to get. Modern, in the city type station will fit perfectly into our scene.

I had that Heljan station many years ago. It does meet your requirements for depth and multi stories. I have long since dismantled it for kit-bashing other projects. I love the main brick entryway on the front with the stairs up to the main entrance. The back side has a raised platform running the length of the building. The platform and the building's roof have a very European look to them. I think the roof could be made to look more American, but would suggest using a different platform on the back for a more American look. Luckilly the platform is a separate piece to be glued on.
If you are using that large train shed, I think it will dwarf this station which could probably fit inside the shed easilly. Despite the modern appearance and multi levels, it really isn't a big station, though it is sufficiantly long (19 1/5" long). The other dimensions (according to an old Walthers catalog) are 5 1/5" deep (including the passenger platform I believe) and 4" high.
I also suggest maybe installing a floor (probably from foam core board) between the first and second floors. This would be partly to keep light from first floor windows showing through the second floor windows, but mostly its because those very long 19" long front and rear walls could likely use some support to keep them straight for the length of the building. As I recall there is no canopy over the passenger platform and I always thought it would have looked better with some kind of weather protection for passengers waiting on the platform. I seem to recall the platform side of the building having lots of windows just like the front.
