Hi there,

I have just joined the forum and I thought you might like to see my recently completed Atlas track circuit:-

It is my intention to shortly get an American loco for this layout

Great! My girlfriend saw this, and now she wants the same exact type of set up in our living room. Like 3 layouts isn't enough.... Thanks a lot pal!

Looks GREAT and is a VERY unique idea. I'm curious as to how you attached them to the walls, those brackets look really nice and finish it off perfectly. I am stumped though how they hold the glass. I used to have a really nice nook bar with glass shelves all the way around it, but they were held up with brackets and the wall racks that the brackets go into. They held crystal decanters of booze (that was never drank), wine glasses, railroad cofffee mugs and other glass railroad type trinkets, but were all shattered in a move. I could have cried. I would never have thought of using glass shelves though for a track around the room. I'd love to see more if you don;t mind, but only when the girlfriend isn't looking over my shoulder. If she ever sees some of the garden railroad layouts I've seen online lately, it'll be yet ANOTHER layout to devide my limited time and resources too, lol

Thanks for sharing this with us!

David - That looks great, I love it. I never understood the around the ceiling trains but the glass gives it class and makes the trains more visible.

Zoegraf, cct70 and GaryB,

Thank you for the kind comments, I am glad you like it

If you are thinking of doing a 'glass railway'- three top tips:-

1.You cannot have too much support for the glass - its heavier than you think !

2.Glass cutting establishments love templates - corrugated card does the job.

3.Once the glass is toughened no more cutting or sizing can be done - accuracy is key

All my 8mm glass was cut by hand but you can have it CNC cut for a neater job but the costs are something that will make you wince! Even by hand they have done a really good job, with very good edges.

Its a great project to do - here are some links to photos of the project....

The shelf supports were sourced from ebay - search for '8mm glass shelf supports or brackets'

Thanks for sharing.

I have supports like yours, but they are black and I got them from a contractor for my glass shelves ten years ago. Haven't been able to find any since. Thanks for the lead.

Hi there,

A few people have asked me about the brackets supporting the glass.

They were sourced from eBay Uk. The item numbers are 120585800528 and 310229672926.

All the best

That is really nice, so I hope you don't mind the question I just have to ask, what kind of cost are we talking about (not including the train) and how long is the run? I've seen similar setups in hobby shops and other businesses, but they didn't use those nice brackets. I've always wanted to do something like this, but don't think I can justify the cost. I see the brackets are ~$3-$5 or so and I guess I could check local glass/cutting prices, so if you don't want to answer, I'll understand.

Owning my own glass buisness, that wasn't a cheap venture you went into!
Looks good though. Is that 3/8" or 1/2" glass

Hi there,

DoubleDaz - Maths is not my strongpoint but the room measure 96x92 inches and the circuit is mounted around all four walls and corners. The glass corners cost UK£45 each with the straights at about UK£18 each. Total glass cost (if you don't drop any!) is about UK£252.
Support of the glass is crucial.

flh80 - The glass is UK 8mm which is about 5/16 thickness or not far off 3/8.

All the best

David

PS - Thanks Bob for the edit - much better !

Thanks, David, not as much as I was expecting. However, the walls I'd want to run around kind of puts it out of my reach anyway. :)

Love your layout - I too have a glass layout around my den, however using glass shelving that wasn't being used. I have the metal track and was wondering how you secured the track to the glass, mine tends to shift when running the Santa Fe causing track separation. I'd welcome any hints.
