hello, this is my first ever post on this forum, i am still new to model railroading. i recently purchased several g-scale items from a yard sale. after i had gotten back home and began looking through all the items i noticed almost all the track was in horrible condition, they had lots of rust covering the rails. Another item was a complete set which looked to be in great condition, even the track looked brand new. The track with this train was made different, still g-scale but the rail joiners where made like the old o-scale track that connected with the little rods sticking out on the ends of the track, this track is made the same way, does anyone know what kind of track this might be called and if its still sold, i think the train set was called lionel ornamental express, it was a christmas set. can anyone lead me in the right direction were i could purchase more of tis kind of track or will i have to switch over to newer track. thanks.

That would be Lionel G gauge track. It hasn't been made for many years, you might find some on an auction site.

G “scale” is kind of a mixture of various scales but I “think” the gauge is the same throughout.
I’d guess the rusty track is more than likely steel. There is a dozen types or track with even more manufacturers and what little I know is they don’t all play well together.
I have three kinds and two match up. Can you post some pictures?
I’m sure someone will be along shortly much more knowledgable than myself.

The first is much better track than the 2nd. Neither are a robust track system. I mean I think the first one has 2 different sizes of curves, and three different lengths of straight track. No switch tracks or crossings.

If you are thinking about getting a little more serious than loop(s) of track consider track from LGB, Piko, or Aristocraft brands. They are interoperable one to the other and very robust. I think Aristocraft has curves from 4 foot circles all the way up to 20 foot circles. As they are expensive, we started with a simple Christmas Loop of 5 foot circle (#2) and a couple straights. Added a turnout or more sections at each birthday or Christmas. Now we can make extensive layouts.
