Fuerst Matthes Paper, #4 mill

Rico

BN Modeller
Well I figured I’d start a new thread about the building of Fuerst Matthes Paper Mill #4.
This will be the fourth version I’ve built of the mill that carries the name of two good friends, Dennis F. and Matt M.
However as it wont be going on the current layout it will be a separate switching layout which, when the time comes to move, will be the start of the next big adventure.
I’ve had these two Walthers kits sitting here on the shelf calling my name for some time now and I can’t just take it anymore.

I managed to cobble the module frame together last night, I usually use 3/4” plywood ripped into strips but went with 1x4 lumber this time. The base is 3/8” ply with crossmembers at 2’ spacing which should be good in this instance.
It will all be glued and screwed before building placement and scenery happens.

Mocking up the track work.
At least two feet is needed on the end to allow space for a loco and two cars to be spotted in the warehouse.

The taller building below is leftover from the previous mill, unsure if it will be used with this one.

While I'm waiting on supplies I thought I’d start on the recovery boiler.
The last couple versions were built per instructions then cut in two later on for the last mill, you can see one in the first picture.
I figured since I modified the warehouse building I’d do this one as well. The seam between the front walls weren’t quite up to snuff so I dug into the scrap box and cobbled a vent shaft (or something) to hide it. I also moved the stacks to the opposite side of the building.

I had a few extra bits afterwards so I used them to add another bump out beside the original.
Next will be a foam core roof and some details.

I’m on the fence for the color of this one, either a faded green or light blue?
The previous mills were all beige or sand color.

Edit:
Decided on Behr paint “Amazon Moss” and thinking of adding a white stripe…

I managed to get a little painting done today between chores and I’m loving this color choice!
I still have to do the concrete base yet.
Have to decide now on the stripe color, the original beige color is okay but thinking white might be better.
You can see what white is like on the chip mill in the background of the second picture.

A little more work done today, the base board is now covered with 1/4” cork with 1/8” cork for the main track.
Also cut the front down which will become an embankment and help to hide the fascia in photos.

Cut away for the road and underpass and laid out some track.

The first track is mainline, second track is inbound cars, third track is outbound cars, fourth track will be the chip and wood lot lead, and the fifth will be the chemical spur. Peco curved turnouts helped to get the most out of the space.

Well I got the white stripe done and installed the windows.
I had just one company decal left that was the correct size to fit the white and managed to screw it up by trying to adjust its position. I’ll get a few more printed up or perhaps mount a larger one. 🤔
There’ll be lighting and a partial interior visible thru the open door.
Still more details to add and paint touchups but I’m loving the overall look.

What a great looking structure! I believe you nailed the color.

Shows you just how versatile Walthers kits really are!

Did the duct work on the R/S come with the kit, or was that an add?

While waiting for some glue to dry earlier today I dug around the scrap bucket and came up with my version of a weigh scale for the mill. This one is kind of a trial run, I might keep it or maybe make an improved one. I have a small digital screen I’ll add on a pole yet.
