A branchline freight shed that I saw in a book on Ontario branchlines, inspired me to scratchbuild this freelanced version for my layout. It is made mostly out of bass wood and cardboard. The window is a left over from a laser wood kit. The shot of the entrance is before it was weathered.
A few years back, I wanted to model a tarp-covered load in HO scale. I found nothing in my parts box that I could use.
During my search, I remembered that many years ago, I sprayed a scene on my layout with Dull Cote. I used aluminum foil to mask the adjacent scenery to protect it from the over-spray. After I completed spraying, I noticed that the aerosol caused the aluminum foil to buckle inward against the scenic details, as if they were covered with a tarp. Voila! I had already produced the tarp that I needed, but I hadn’t realized it.
This flat car is a CNR flat car that was made by kit bashing a Tichi kit. The tarps are made out of thin foil. On the layout, the tarps do not look as shiny. While photographing the model outside in the sunlight, I realized I will eventually need to apply more dullcoat.
