Anyone out there interested in Free-Mo?
Thanks

I used to be part of Ottawa HOTrak and I got into the club cause they promoted the use of freemo modules. IMO, this is the best modular layout style. I got out of the club because they started to move away from that format. I miss it!
Why do you ask?
Excuse my lack of knowledge on this but, what is Free-Mo? I figured out the module part of it, but a proper explanation of the term would be nice too

I stumbled upon a number of guys here in northern Ohio and built a module and it was great fun, especially the operating get to gether. just looking for other people and thought I would raise a thread to stimulate some chatter. Handnt seen much about it in this forum. as for what does Free-Mo mean I dont exactly know but I believe its derived from Freestyle Module. The europeans were playing with it first and call it Fre-Mo. Most people that participate are operations types. There is a bunch of Free-Mo stuff on the net and You=Tube. Check it out.

Thanks, I am familiar with regular modular railroading but the word freestyle throws me off. I wonder what the difference is. Perhaps less stipulation on scenic consistency or other standards?
For those interested in module specs check out

Great information page. Like I said check out u-tube "Free-Mo Model Railroad"

There has been an occasional group in the PNW with about about a dozen or modules I know of including 4 of mine. We have not yet met critical mass or anyone that has built curves so our setups have been limited to very linear layouts, usually at Railroad Prototype Modeler meets. There were a couple bigger setups in the Seattle area a few years ago but the Rails by the Bay RPM meet that hosted them hasn't happened the last couple years. The bigger setups were with the very active group in Chilliwack, BC.
There is a link to photos of my modules in my signature. I really like the idea, it is not roundy round like a display rr, you have to coordinate and operate. The larger curve radius makes big equipment look good.
The idea is that the ends of the modules are standard width, height and the track is straight and flat for 6" but you can do whatever between the ends. One of my modules is 55.5" long because that is what fit into my Civic. I think there is an article about a recent RPM/Free-mo meet in the latest Railroad Model Craftsman magazine for more info or the link listed above.
My first experiance with Free-Mo was a good one even though we only had twelve modules. We managed to get some switching excercise and some good pictures. I wonder if there will be a Free-Mo layout at Sacramento. There sure was a nice one at the Milwaukee convention. Several of our members paticipated. There are some shots on you tube. There will be a modular layout at Sacramento that is featured in July MRR but I dont believe it is to Free-Mo specs. Regardless you will get the idea.

A group of US modelers in Johannesburg, South Africa have commenced with the building of FreeMo modules and would like to know if there are any other South African modelers using this same concept.
Good to hear. Send Pictures.
