There is a bit tussle on another forum about the Franklin Mint at one time selling a painted brass model of a Southern PS-4 others myself included claim it was a special detailed and painted run of the standard Mantua Pacific.
Some even saying there may have been two different models:confused:

While i recieved mailings from FM on this unit I do not recall it being advertised as a brass locomotive.
Anyone ever come across either such a brass model or any advertisment of such?

I don't know for sure that there weren't two different models of the PS-4 done by the Franklin Mint but I know for sure one of them was was specially detailed and painted model that at least had a Mantua mechanism. I have a friend of mine that had one that threw a main rod and I help him disassemble it and fix it. I couldn't see any markings on the shell to indicate it was made by Mantua but the engine had a Mantua motor and drive train, right down to those main driving rods rivets that were are a real pain to get out and replace. The body definitely wasn't the standard Mantua body and, if it was, it must have been produced with no molded on details and sent somewhere for detailing and painting. Since that seems unlikely to me, I would guess it was a specially made brass shell that was mounted on a standard Mantua underframe and used standard Mantua mechanicals. That may explain the idea that there was a brass model and a separate model totally made by Mantua.
