Here are a few pics of my first attempt making and painting rocks.
I carved out extruded foam and covered it with about 500 coats of paint before I got the "right" finish.

Well, Bernie that looks pretty darn sharp!
Good job!
Looking good, Bernie. I like the color, very realistic. DJ.
Dang Bernie, thats great. Good job and thanks for sharing.
I think they are really nice looking, good colors.
Dave
Very nice color job on those rocks, Bernie. The only thing I'd point out is that you have a couple of obvious seams where the foam is laminated together. Try filling those with scuptamold or patching plaster to give the cliff a little more monolithic appearance
What kind of paint did you coat them with? A regular paint or a texture paint.
Those look way better than my first try. I had a really hard time with getting the painting right too. Yours look real good.
Jim, I'm going to remove the dry latex caulk from the seems and leave some as is and fill others in with spackle.
I read a lot about colouring rocks and there are a lot of good techniques. This is what worked for me:
I gave them an initial coat of lightly diluted gray latex. I then made a heavy wash with burnt sienna. I sprayed the wash on sporadically and then blended the wash in with a brush. Lastly I dry brushed the high spots with white latex.
