will a shell from a walthers trainline fit on the chassis of a walthers proto?
I want to create a low nose SD9M but i am not that good with my hands. If i could put the gp9m shell on the sd9 frame i could make my sd9m without having to kitbash anything. If a little work is needed to make it work thats fine i can manage a little but i cant do a big project. thanks for any help you can give. or any other ideas as to how to complete the project that i have in my head
An SD9 is a lot longer than a GP9 so no it will not fit. I have kit bashed quite a few chop nose GP9s and SD9s. Its really not that hard. Cut the short hood down and put a new cab on it. The Atlas Sd26 cab is a good starting point for a new cab.
ok thanks, where would i find and or get the cabs from? and how would i go about doing it?
Cabs can be ordered from Atlas.

This is the first one I ever chopped. Its a proto 2000. All i did was cut the nose down to the correct size and fit the new cab to the shell. Filled in a few areas with some puddy and painted it. The next 2 that I did were a lot better than this one. I do not have photos of them with in easy access right now. What brand of shell are you wanting to cut up? A one piece athearn shell is going to be a bit harder to cut up.
had never really thought about what manufacture i was going to cut up
You might also look for a P2k GP 18 low hood. Although, they all had single piece windshield. Phil
Here's what you could do. Replace the cab and nose of a Athearn BB SD9 with the cab/nose cut from the Walthers Trainline GP9M. The reason I'm recommending using the Athearn BB SD9 is that it is a "wide-body" model just like the Walthers GP9M. If you don't already know, both the BB SD9 and Trainline GP9M bodies are a scale foot to wide.
In my opinion this would be the easiest way to get a chopped nose SD9.

This is how I did mine.I removed the top of the short hood and cut the sides down to the height I wanted and glued the hood top back in place. The cab on mine is from a RPP shell and the loco is designated a SD19m.Bodywise nothing else is altered.
You could use styrene strips to make a windsheild frame and number boards are available aftermarket. If I were to do this again I think I would use the origonal Canadian safety cab.
