Well, as my layout room comes ever closer to completeness, I've been doing some SERIOUS research in layout building and soul searching as to what exactly I want out of my railroad. I love big-time AC traction mountain railroading. But, I also love switching local industry with a purpose. (you know, a chip mill on one end, and maybe a plywood plant on the other. Or a coal mine and a power plant. you get the picture.) So after much reading and searching through track plans, I decided to try to free-hand one. Below is what I came up with. The room is 12X18. The plan is on a 1 foot grid. The lines in red are at 48 inches above the floor, with the blue being at 36. to simulate a branch line to a lower lying area. The top right corner is probably an interchange. (CSX w/ NS) Now the blue line is where I need some help. I want a few industries as I mentioned above. Pay no attention to how I have it at the end there, as I'm open to suggestions here. Is that downgrade do-able with that lenght of run? One more thing about the room. It's an upstairs room with knee walls. I have an illustration below as well.

From where your blue line starts to the first turnout, it looks like you only have 5 ft. So if you do the math 12"/60"= 20% grade.
That's a little steep.

HAHA. Well let me clarify. the grade wont be between those points. Any industry or spur that comes off that line will be on level ground, just as in reality. Maybe it's not do-able. Maybe have the yard end and branch on the 36, and run the main line up to the 48 inch level around to the other end of the layout.
