DIY Sectional Track with Integrated Roadbed?

Has anyone tried to create their own sectional track with integrated roadbed in the style of Kato's Unitrack or Bachmann's E-Z Track? I'm thinking of taking regular sectional track, adding a roadbed and base, and building a connector on either end that would hold the ends together securely and ensure a good electrical connection. The connectors could be detached and reattached at will. The advantages would be that you could model your track as you like, with ballast and even a grassy slope, but then connect and disconnect sections as you liked. If the connectors were solid enough, you could even set up a layout that could be rearranged, stored away, and moved as one likes. I guess the disadvantages would be that close trackwork might not work well with the integrated roadbed.

I don't know if this is even practical, but I'm faced with some years of moving around so this is an attractive idea to me.
