I've decided that sometime in the near future I'd like to experiment with DCC. I only have a small layout and a few locomotives which most have DCC quick plugs in them. This leads me to a million questions before I spend my money. Does anyone have experience with this system and is it a good one? Would I be able to use it with Atlas code 83 track?

We have a Digitrax Super Chief but I have used the Zephyr system a couple of times. Digitrax is top notch and the Zephyr is a great starter system that is reverse compatible (will work with future and past Digitrax products) and well featured. It's a bargain.

In addition to the linked threads above, Digitrax is now offering a Zephyr Plus, with more power and more abilities, for not much more money. It would be worth a look.
BTW, I have two Zephyrs, one for my HO layout, and one for my N layout. They do all I need them to do with no issues.

I've had a Zephyr Xtra for a couple of weeks now, and love it. I converted an Atlas Silver GP40 with dual-mode decoder to DCC, installed a decoder in one SD70MAC and a sound decoder in another. It changes a lot about model railroading when you see two locomotives, on the same track, moving in different directions and at different speeds. The first time you play with it is just amazing. I have nothing but good to say about the system.

The good thing about DCC is you can have two trains going in opposite directions on the same track. The bad thing about DCC is you can have two trains going in opposite directions on the same track. can you say "cornfield meet?"

Gomez Addams would have loved DCC.

Not only that, it also forces you to pay attention to turnout position-the first time you run through a switch that isn't lined correctly you understand what people mean when they talk about the entire layout coming to a halt.

Hopefully I'll pay enough attention to not have any "cornfield meets". Perhaps my layout will turn out to be a testing ground for positive train control?
