Does anyone know why there is yellow under the step in front of the cab in the first shot and not in the second shot that was taken 3 years later. Has it faded and worn off or has it been painted over in white?

A CN idiosyncrasy, interesting as usual :D

2001 Zebra paint

2003 modified after coolers, no yellow

2003 before the Zebra paint job, I believe your answer is to be found here
White above the step and yellow (Caution sign), then white trim

The caution would read "Caution no Footboards, in red, there also could have been an black "F" on the white to indicate this was the front of the loco. At that time and before the CN considered the long hood to be the front however the visibility through the windshields and the low hood put an end to that, but I guess the powers to be thought it should be doccumented.
