ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.
You also need to find a better way of designing the layout. Your illustration does not take into account transitions of the curves or turnout length. I like SCARM but there are others that escape me at the moment.
I probably would have noticed the 'reach' issue fairly quick - luckily I have the option of moving the entire platform a few feet in any direction so I can move it away from walls and have access to all four sides. That should help.
As for the book, I've added it to my list for the next show/sale on 24Nov
if you are just looking to run trains and do scenery it should not be too bad. i would move the yard(if that is what is on the lower right) to the front of the long section. figure you are wanting to run a long train, 5 feet does not produce a very big yard.
Actually, that section of platform is only 4' wide ... maybe it would be better to turn the yard 90 degrees and extend the platform to a full sheet of plywood - that would give me another 3' of yard length.
