I have an old Tyco HO engine. Is it possible to hardwire a decoder in it? If so, what is the best type/kind to use?

What engine do you have? What kind of motor? The Tyco name has covered what has been offered by several separate manufacturers. Their quality differs from locomotives that are very good candidates for DCC to others that aren't worth the work. Which one you have will allow us to give you an answer.

A decoder can be hardwired into anything. What type of decoder is determined by what kind of engine it is. Unless it has high sentimental value or is actually a good locomotive, it being a Tyco is usually a very big mark against it
