I'm getting ready to do some shopping ($$$) at the upcoming New England Model Train Expo next month.
On my list is a Zephyr DCC system for a shelf layout currently under construction. I've already picked up a Bachmann Spectrum GE 44 ton switcher, which is DCC ready (Walthers #160-80035, to be specific).
Any suggestions as to what decoder would be appropriate for this small diesel?
Thanks in advance!

I'd actually recommend the DZ125 for that one... and yank out the circuit board and wire it directly to the motor, lights and track pickups.

Bachmann claims it's DCC-ready... what that really means is they've added some solder holes to their circuit board that you can solder the wires in.

I've tried this with several of their products, and in the end, I've wound up just yanking the board out and wiring directly. Every time I've tried soldering (neatly!) to their board, the loco acts twitchy.

Once I get rid of the board and wire direct, everything runs fine.

While Digitrax has a decent system, I'd suggest you look at something other than the Zephyr... especially if you want to run more than one train at a time. If you're serious about Digitrax, I'd suggest going the extra bucks and getting the Empire Builder. Unless you're only planning on running one at a time, and then the Zephyr is fine.

Check the MRC Prodigy.... very easy to use, and has an excellent display. Also, the instructions are written in English, rather than Computergeekese. ;) The NCE PowerCab is a good system too. Regardless of what you choose, try before you buy!

I have installed decoders in a couple 44 Tonners and I just yank out the board and hardwire them. Also I use an NCE sytem as its very user friendly comparing it to digitrax. If you have any questions about installing a decoder then you can EMail me directly at MGWSY@aol.com and I shall help you out.

Thanks for the advice! I'll spend some time at the show, pestering the heck out of everyone who has a DCC system on display. They will have some operating layouts, so perhaps I can get some "hands on" time at the controls of various systems.
