DCC Ready plugs - empty or dummy?

Sometime back in the EARLY Spring I bought an Athearn AC4400 "DCC Ready" loco. Then I broke my leg (OUCH !!!) and couldn't get upstairs to the train room til about a month ago. I did some cleaning and designing before getting back to the loco. Now the loco has an EMPTY 8-pin connector and a dummy connector on the 9-pin block. I have ordered a DH166 to replace the 9-pin dummy but:

do I need a dummy for the 8-pin or can/should it be empty

No, it needs to be empty. If you put anything in the 8 pin plug, you'd need to unplug the 9 pin dummy plug. Since you're not doing that to begin with, just unplug the 9 pin dummy plug, and plug in the decoder there.
