I am building my first layout (n scale), and want to incorporate a walthers basic DC turntable (150-2790) into the mix. (with the motorized upgrade)

what is the best way to control that turntable?

While I'd love thier new well type DCC turntable with its 60 position index as featured in the 2011 catalog, unfortunately I dont have the budget for that monster.

Anyone have any good ideas how to control these?

A dpdt switch with center off. Wire it as a reversing switch to control direction. The center off will let you stop the rotation when you get the rails aligned to where you need them..

If you wanted to make it DCC, you could just add a basic locomotive decoder and set the CVs so it only runs at one speed. Control it just like a loco on your throttle. It isn't as nice as the one that remembers where the tracks are, but it would work. You could also build your own decoder and position finder using an AVR mirco-controller.

I run mine w/a cheap HO scale transformer. I connect the wires to the engine side of the transformer, that way I have reverse & I can run it at the speed I want.
