A lot of good DC power packs can be found in the $40 to $60 price range. I recommed either the KATO UNITRACK power pack or the MRC Railpower 1370 which are definitely better than the transformer that comes in entry level starter sets. The next step up from those two would be the MRC Tech 4 series w/ momentum which run around $75.

It means that you can throw a switch on the power pack, and the train will start out slowly and build up to the speed setting you have on the throttle. It makes for very smooth starts and stops.
