Craftsman at heart
I just put the shell back on after weathering it. Wheels are a bit too shinny for my liking and will have to paint them later.

I like it, subtle and not over done. What did you use, looks like powders or chalks? How do you like the Rapido steam generator cars? I have been thinking of picking open up.

I also like the overgrown road and the guy on the bike, nice scenery. Is that static grass over cinders?

Hi Brad,

I use chalks and seal it with dullcote then add some streaks later without sealing it in case I want to change the look of the weathering. I handle the model with cotton gloves; this prevents the unsealed chalk from smearing and of course finger prints. I didn't want to over weather it because it would be only two years old on my layout and CNR kept their equipment well maintained when it came to appearance. I thought I over weathered my Rapido baggage express car, but after looking at some footage of them in service on some branchlines, I noticed they could get a little neglected when it came to washing them.
Great models, but I had to tweak the grab irons a bit; they were a bit askew. A plus is, that they are metal so they don't break easy. My wheels were out of gauge when I purchased the steam generator, but Rapido promptly replaced them by mailing me new ones. Great customer service. I also like the undercarriage detail on their models.
Yes that is static grass over cinders. The only thing I don't like about the static grass is that it fades over time and becomes almost shinny/transparent. On some spots on my layout I have retouched the grass with paint. I also like using it between ties on my sidings.

I like this shot Zoegraf. What colour or technique are you using for ties? Are they wooden because the texture looks more varied between the ties than what you would find on normal flex track, I could be wrong?

They are wooden ties that I scrape, split, and beat then I stain about 5 batches in different shades of brown. After I lay the ties, I add some more stain with oily black, rail brown, and bleach.
Most of the mainline and branchline track is not visible on my layout because it is close to the height of my eye-level and is not visible due to scenery. I use some structures to hide my handmade switches that are not ballasted (I'm saving those for my next layout because I put a lot of work into them and I get no wheel drop from them). If you look at my post "Scenes from a narrow layout continued" you will hardly see any track. http://www.modelrailroadforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16986
Any track close to the edge of my layout, which is visible, is mostly hand laid ties and rail. Eventually all of the track near the edge I will replace with hand laid.
I have some flex track on my layout that I covered heavily with ballast to represent an area of my mainline in the midst of getting new ballast. http://www.modelrailroadforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13664
In my ballast quarry I used micro engineering track because it is mostly covered with ballast debris and dust. I will definitely hand lay ties and track on my next layout and will save the modules of my current layout that have hand laid track like my coaling trestle module.

Beautiful scenery and weathering on the steam generator looks just right.

Thanks.
I model a branchline so it's living on a storage track for now; have no coaches to go with it; just a baggage express car. I hope someday Rapido or True Line Trains makes a heavyweight coach or combine. For now my passengers get around in a gas electric doodlebug and a Budd RDC, which is prototypical for the branchline I model.
Here's a shot of the prototype and the brass model of it.
Cheers.
