I’m learning that in regards to CNR heralds and emblems that there are exceptions to the rule.
In part, I bought this specific model with the horizontal herald to suit the year 1956, which I model, but much later, I discovered photos of the prototype dated 1958 with a tilted herald on it though I’ve read that heralds were suppose to be horizontal after 1954.
Oh the woes of model railroading without adequate research. Some day I will have the tender redone.
I was hopping the photo was dated wrong, but check out the hopper with the larger lettering. It is a 1958 paint scheme.
This loco retired in 1959. Perhaps, as you mentioned, they just didn't bother applying a new herald because they knew it would be retired in three years.
Oh! the headache of trying to have a loco look prototypical. For now I'll just pretend this loco had a horizontal herald, which it seems it never had.
Is 1954 when the horizontal (as opposed to tilted) herald was introduced? It's not surprising that many engines kept older heralds for many years afterwards.
CP hasn't used their "multimark" emblem since the late 1980s and there are still engines out there that still have it.
