Chicago & Northwestern GP15-1 #4401 had served the CNW all over the system but toward the end she spent all her time in service at the West Chicago IL yard. It was here switching the St.Charles where I got to know this locomotive. Even after the UP merger it was a long time before a patch was applied to 4401 and even longer before she was completely repainted. Good news is that even though she is repainted today as UPY 546 she still works the West Chicago yard and the local switch jobs in the area.
Started with a Walthers Trainline GP15-1
Major work involved replaceing the stock 88" nose with a 81" athearn nose and cutting into the shell for the large grills on the long hood.
The new nose needed a shim to hold its shorter length and the anti-climber had to be removed and rebuilt
Installed see through grills for nice effect and future sound opening
Lots of small details added to the rear
Because this locomotive had to run over ATS sections of the CNW in both standard and long hood forward running it had two ATS shoes.
Awaiting final details such as beacon all weather window and wiper blades but just about done.
