Can some one explain Dynamic brakes?

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

I have a person on another forum who is intersted in buying one of my engines and he asked if it had DB. I Am assuming that he is refering to Dynamic brakes but I don't excatly know what to look for. Could someone help me out? Thanks.

What kind of engine is it?

For older EMD stuff the dynamic brakes are the bulge and fans above the engine compartment (SD40/45 Series and older) SD50 and newer all have dynamic brakes, that is the single large fan directly behind the cab (SD50/60/70) or at the extreme rear of the unit (SD70ACe/M-2/80/90)

As for the other makes, sorry, I can't help you there.

Shown here are dynamic brake (DB) & a non-DB versions on Santa Fe GP7s. The DB on EMDs were usually contained in a bulge top center on the long hood behind the cab. The 1st is a rare Santa Fe B unit. 2nd is a standard GP7 w/ cab w/ air reservoirs on roof top. What type of engine do you have?

The GP50 DB is in same location, but has a boxier shape vs roundish on a GP7. Does your GP50 have one? If it's an Athearn it may have a lift out DB section to give modeler a choice of having DB or non DB versions.
