Building the STP Railroad

I am in the planning stage of making a new layout. It is going to be a fictious city, well town, that is feed by the Union Pacific mainline. I want to do a switching layout, and maybe module so I can move it around relatively easily.

After looking at what people have been doing, I think I am going to go with some sort of light table, with foam on top. But I have some questions. What thickness of foam should I use? I think I will use 2 sheets, so that I can still do stuff like gorges and the such. I don't really plan to do much in elevation change.

I will hopefully get started on drawing up a plan on the track cad thing (forget the name).

Also one more question. How difficult is it to do something like laying your own track by hand. It seems like it would be some fun to do.

edit: one more question, when using Xtrckcad, what should I use from the parameter files?

haha 2" sounds good to me. I wanted to work in something like a river, but I can just add foam when needed for that.

Still trying to figure out xtrckcad
