Building a BNSF business car fleet.

I had posed this question on a yahoo group page sometime back, and thanks Josh for the help! Im now starting this project of building a small fleet of BNSF business cars. So far have 1 car, and 2 on order. Im not planning on making dead on exact models of each car, but looking for reasonable stand-ins. So far have the Kato business car for the Mississippi River, a diner from the super chief set for the Fred Harvey, and found a close car for the mountain view/valley view. Of course, figuring out the best way to patch windows and make it look good, and adding fluting to some smooth side cars with close window arraingments are the biggest issues I could use some advise on! But, if anyone has done some cars, how did ya do it, and drop some pics!!!

You're welcome. If you figure out how to do more, I'd love to know. Modeling BNSF & UP business cars, along with 3 full Southwest Chief trains, AND the final Copper Country Limited train is time consuming, so I more ideas I can get from other people, the better.

Ebay lot

I got a bid in on a lot in ebay and it has a couple cars that you might be able to use . If i get it i will let you know and you can buy them cause i wont use them .

Well here is what im going to use for the mountain view/valley view car. http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/932-6780 Its pretty close, may attempt to fill in 1 of the small windows, adding 1 maybe a pain, but could be omitted as long as I can get the idea across. here is the real valley view http://www.danrutherford.org/valleyview.pdf
I wonder if there's more of those PDF files?

In any case, that car is a decent foobie.

The problem I see is, the side shown in the Walthers photo is opposite that of the drawing. The top view shows the window arrangement on that side, going left to right, 3 small, 8 large, one small. The model is 2 small, 7 large, 1 small.

That car might work better for #28, Mountain View, then #26, Valley View.

In any case, a number of BNSF cars have had fluting added, Palace Car Co. makes some.
548-3405 Side Fluting .020" Thick Styrene pkg(2) -- For Budd Cars pkg(2)
548-3414 Side Fluting .020" Thick Styrene -- For Postwar Pullman Cars

.020" seems thick to me, I'd think .015" might be better, but they may be counting the flute ridges as well.

#30, Glacier View, and #31 Bay View are on the top of my list. Walthers makes a GN prototype (#30) http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/932-6520

Trains station Products makes a number of good products too:

And:
732-493 Car Ends -- Burlington Northern Theatre Car End

Been highly interested in seeing the theatre car myself, no pics can be found! I was looking into redoing the skirting around the trucks on the kato trucks to make it closer the prototype. Not quite sure how im goin to do it though. And id like to redo the back end of the platform railing to open it up, I wish there was a readily available aftermarket part that I could use to replace it.

Got that Bid Riss2509

I got that bid on those cars i was talking about and if you can use one or two of these passenger cars and we talk about trading or selling of them. My Email is threeredwines@yahoo.com

Very nice lot! Unfortunatly the Athearn cars would take too much work to rework them. Thanks for the offer though!

I noticed in a recent picture of a BNSF business train in Trains Magazine that there was what appeared to be a Superliner car on the end. Any ideas on why that might have been there?

not sure, when did the issue come out? couldve been a special, or, couldve been mistaken for a few cars they have that are ex commuter cars, bought and rehabbed by transisco tours, and bought by BN then rebuilt again by BNSF!

It was the latest issue, page 9.
The car was at the end of the train (as the photo was from the front, that's why I can't really tell). The train was 6 cars long, not including the loco, but including everything else.
The train was pulled by a freight engine, hence the apparent generator car right after it (looks like an old B unit conversion IMHO)
The train was headed down a brand-new 30-mile spur to the Signal Peak Mine. Picture was taken Sept. 2.
The article referred to "BNSF Ry.'s business train" as if there was only one. Is this true?

There, enough information for you? :p

Thanks for the link on the Sleeper, going to buy 4 myself!

I'm thinking the car he saw was in fact a Bi-level.
