ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.
I am just getting into the hobby and need to do much research to figure out what direction to go. What good reference books would you recommend to get a thorough understanding of model railroading.
thanks
There are many books published by Kalmbach for model railroading for beginners. I would get DCC for Beginners, How to Build Realistic Model Railroad Scenery. And of course the book considered the bible for MRR is Track Planning for Realistic Operation by John Armstrong.
there are to many books published and unfortunately there are only few ok ones and only couple that are good. the reason is that majority of books were created with primary goal of generating profit in mind, and only then teaching the MRR subject .
of ones I liked is Track Planning for Realistic Operation. instead of giving fish in form of ready information, they rather explain the concept and leave you ideas how things can be acomplished. IMHO.
for DCC there is http://www.dccwiki.com/Main_Page, why buy any books? which brings me to a point that in today's age of inset it is entirely possible to start without book at all. just look around. bunch of interesting projects here.
Hi and welcome!
I would go to http://www.KalmbachBooks.com
Kalmbach has many very informative books on any subject you want to know about in MRRing {Model RailRoad-ing}.They are also the publishers of Model Railroader and Trains magazines, among others.
There should also be some available at your local hobby shop.
